Dr. John Spencer Ellis: Thirty-Four Years, Thousands of Clients, and One Focused Mission for Men Over 40

Ask what qualifies someone to guide another person's health and the honest answer is usually some combination of education, experience and evidence that it worked.

Dr. John Spencer Ellis has an unusually deep supply of all three.

Orange County, 1992

The business started in Rancho Santa Margarita, California, and for more than twenty years across Orange County, John worked directly with thousands of clients.

That's the part of the résumé that matters most, and it's the part that can't be shortcut. Two decades of face-to-face work is where a coach learns what genuinely survives a busy week, a bad night's sleep and a body that doesn't recover the way it used to. Everything built afterward stands on those years.

The academic and clinical foundation

Two bachelor's degrees — in business and health science. An MBA. A doctorate in education. Plus 14 months of doctoral-level studies in naturopathic health education.

His professional certifications include massage therapy, plyometrics, physical education, flexibility, nutrition coaching, water fitness, exercise rehabilitation, golf conditioning, Pilates, personal training, clinical hypnotherapy, sports hypnosis, PACE circuit training and yoga.

His medical training includes a license in radiological technology, a medical assisting certification with phlebotomy, and McKenzie rehabilitation — alongside specialized study in ropes course facilitation, corporate team-building, neurolinguistics, sleep science, brain health and wellness.

The breadth is deliberate. It means training, nutrition, recovery, mindset and clinical literacy arrive together rather than as separate conversations with separate people.

A life spent testing it personally

John holds a 2nd degree black belt in Kung-fu, black belts in Ninjutsu and Tae Kwon Do, and blue belts in Krav Maga, Kempo Karate and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He trained in Muay Thai for 12 years and is a certified instructor of self-defense, fitness kickboxing and fitness boxing.

He completed the Ironman Triathlon, competed in the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu World Championships, placed 5th at the U.S. National Biathlon Championships, and won both the Montebello Cycling Classic and the Roadrunner Inline skate race.

He has ridden his bicycle enough miles to circle the Earth.

Scaling the work

For 33 years, John served as founder and CEO of four organizations: the National Exercise & Sports Trainers Association (NESTA), the Spencer Institute, the International Triathlon Coaching Association and the MMA Conditioning Association. He also founded and directed the Get America Fit Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to public health education.

He was one of 12 Subject Matter Experts who wrote the first Board Certification for the Fitness Industry (NBFE).

He created Adventure Boot Camp — the largest fitness boot camp system in the world in the mid-2000s — along with IMPACT, Kung-fu Fitness and TACTIX, and co-developed Survival Combat Fitness.

His programs have been used by Cirque du Soleil, the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, U.S. Secret Service and Coast Guard, and he has consulted for the UFC. His work has helped create over 500,000 jobs globally, and each week more than one million people engage with a program he created.

Media and publishing

John has been featured on Oprah Radio, ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS, FOX, FOX Reality, SPIKE and ESPN.

He served as the fitness and lifestyle expert on Bravo's The Real Housewives of Orange County (seasons 3 and 4) and Daybreak OC, and appeared on the Emmy® Award-winning series Starting Over, plus Life Moments, Camp Reality and America's Premier Experts, Health & Wellness Today.

For three years he hosted the Ms. Fitness USA & World Competitions for FOX Sports. He created and executive produced the award-winning documentary The Compass, appears in the film Riches, and featured in the martial arts action film Double Tap. He served as an expert panelist for TEDmed.

He's the former fitness editor of OC Flair and former publisher of Personal Trainer Magazine, with features in Muscle and Fitness, Businessweek, U.S. News and World Report, Cosmopolitan, the New York Times, Men's Health, Better Homes and Gardens, Women's World and Self.

His books include the Amazon #1 bestsellers New Rules of Success, The Wellness Code and Rapid Body Makeover.

Recognition: Personal Trainer Hall of Fame Inductee (2012), Fitness Hall of Fame nominee (2013), Irvine Valley College Distinguished Alumni Award (2007), Top 100 Most Influential Personal Trainers of All Time (2005), and a Quilly Award from the National Academy of Best-Selling Authors (2016).

He delivered the Commencement Speech for Irvine Valley College, has shared the stage with Jack Canfield, Mark Victor Hansen, Daymond John, Brian Tracy, Les Brown, Marie Forleo and Jim Kwik, and has collaborated directly with Dr. Oz and Dr. Andrew Weil.

Why men over 40, and why now

After serving nearly every population imaginable across three decades, John has concentrated his personal coaching practice on men over 40.

The logic is clean: it's the one group where every piece of his background applies simultaneously. The clinical literacy. The performance training. The behavior-change work. The sleep science and brain health study. And the business acumen, which matters enormously for men at this stage of life.

John's new work with older men includes longevity protocols which can help reverse sexual dysfunction, alongside comprehensive attention to strength, body composition, bloodwork markers, sleep quality and sustained daily energy.

What men mention first, though, isn't typically a number. It's how the change registers — because feeling stronger, healthier and having increased energy is an assault on the senses. Mornings arrive differently. Food tastes like something again. Training becomes the part of the day you look forward to rather than the part you get through.

John is seeking men who feel convicted about making a massive enhancement in their lives — men who've decided that the next thirty years deserve deliberate design rather than drift, and who are ready to put real work behind that decision.
